Denarau Island, also known as just Denarau, is located just off the mainland of Viti Levu. On a map, you may not notice that the region is a separate island—it is connected by a bridge that crosses a small inlet to the Nadi River and is less than 10km away from the hub of Nadi town. The journey to Denarau from Nadi International Airport takes approximately 20 minutes. This short, convenient distance makes it the ideal place for travellers who want to land and commence their Fiji holiday almost straight away, plus it is great for families with young children who have just endured a long flight!
Denarau Island was developed into a resort hub in the late 1960s. The region is known as the largest integrated resort island in the world, being a purpose-built site full of activities that enhance the appeal of “resort life”. Denarau boasts eight large resorts, beaches and the championship 18-hole Denarau Golf & Racquet Club. There are designer suites, pools, retail areas and restaurants that feature some of the best dining Fiji has to offer, plus many great cruises and tours depart from the Port Denarau Marina, including charters out to the stunning Mamanuca Islands.
Getting around Denarau is easy. The inexpensive Bula Bus collects guests from the main resorts on the island and can take them to a range of tourist spots and activities. For a cultural experience, head into bustling Nadi to explore the community markets and shopping centres or stay on the island to catch one of the many events that are hosted there. Port Denarau is the host of the Fiji International Jazz and Blues Festival and multiple resorts chip in to host the South Pacific Food and Wine Festival which boasts international chefs cooking up the incredible flavours of the South Pacific!
Denarau Island is a popular place for weddings, honeymoons and events. The services on offer by the likes of the Sheraton Fiji Resort, the Westin Denarau Resort & Spa, Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa and the Sheraton Denarau Villas are truly exemplary.
